The following opportunities are provided to enhance the learning of all students.
Academic Super Bowl – If you enjoy demonstrating your knowledge of science, math, social studies and English, you are invited to participate in this statewide competition sponsored by Purdue University. The topic or theme changes each year. The GMS team is comprised of three students in each subject matter.
Chess Club – Wanted: beginning and experienced chess players. We offer instruction that will meet the needs of all abilities. Chess Club encourages students to participate in tournament play, at both individual and team events, and offers a chance for you to meet other kids and form lasting friendships!
National Junior Honor Society – We participate in several service projects to benefit members of the Goshen community and also those in need throughout the United States. Membership for seventh and eighth grade students is based on five qualifications: scholarship, citizenship, character, leadership, and service.
Science Olympiad – Would you like to learn more about science? The purpose of Science Olympiad is to promote the use of science and interest in the sciences beyond what is presented in the classroom. Knowledge is applied and acquired through participating in events such as meteorology, egg drop, bridge building, chemistry, water quality, tree/animal identification, fossils, and bottle rockets. Preparation (e.g., studying, building projects, etc.) for the events culminates in an all-day competition against area middle schools at the Goshen College Science Olympiad Regional Competition held in February.
Builders Club -
Skate Club –Are you interested in skate boarding or roller blading? In its third year, Skate Club has grown from 11 students to 53 middle schoolers who participate. Several times during the school year, we travel to Blindside Sports Park in Elkhart and skate to our hearts content.
Ski Club – If you enjoy skiing or snowboarding, this is an opportunity for you to enjoy the slopes with your friends! Students travel to Swiss Valley Ski Resort located in Jones, Michigan.
Spell Bowl – Do you like challenges? Students who participate in Spell Bowl practice weekly for a statewide competition in the fall. Students learn the meaning of words, as well as how to spell them. The written competition is done as a collaborative team effort. Students study approximately 1,700 words for this competition!
Student Advisory Council & GMS Teen Court – 8th grade students apply to be a part of Student Advisory Council and GMS Teen Court. Students are selected based on their experience, desire, and potential for leadership. Members of SAC & Teen Court participate in a variety of leadership training opportunities. GMS Teen Court is a school-based teen court program where students determine constructive consequences for peers who have violated school rules. For more information on the GMS Teen Court program, click here.
Student Council – Members of Student Council participate in a variety of activities designed to make GMS a unique school. Throughout the year, we sponsor spirit weeks, Red Ribbon activities, and the annual eighth grade dance. We also provide the faculty with special recognition during Teacher Appreciation Week and decorate GMS for the Christmas holidays.
Yearbook – If you enjoy being creative, this is an excellent opportunity
to display your talent! Students work with a faculty advisor to design and
publish an annual yearbook. Students are responsible for taking digital photographs
and creating layouts on a website.
